Nominations open for 2015 land management awards

Local Land Services Western Region is inviting landholders and groups who are involved in land and environmental management to enter the 2015 Western Local Land Management Awards.

The awards recognise the work of individuals, groups or organisations that focus on projects that help manage or improve their part of the Western Local Region.

Community Education Officer, Fiona Harris has encouraged everyone from farmers and land managers to Landcare and pest management groups to enter the awards.

Junior Environmental Care Awards can be awarded to day care centres, primary and secondary schools, youth groups, scout groups or others who have shown initiative and dedication to improving their local landscape and natural resources.

Applications are open until 5pm on Monday 20 April.

Information packs and entry forms can be downloaded from www.western.lls.nsw.gov.au  and are available from any Western Local Land Services office.

"This awards program is offered every two years and is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the efforts of community groups, schools, businesses and individuals," Ms Harris said.

"There is a wide range of people working hard throughout the region to improve the land, vegetation, rivers, groundwater, cultural heritage and biodiversity of the Western Local Region and we are keen to acknowledge their contribution.

"We are looking for entries from schools for their involvement in natural resource management, local councils for drawing attention to environmental initiatives and community groups that have tackled invasive native scrub or addressed biosecurity concerns.

"We are also keen to see entries from individuals who are implementing change on their property, such as encouraging groundcover by reducing total grazing pressure, fencing waterways to manage pests or embracing conservation farming techniques."

There are five categories in this year's awards:

  • Individual land carer
  • Innovation in sustainable farm practices
  • Innovative community group
  • Indigenous land management
  • Junior land care team.

The winner of each category will receive a trophy and $500 in prize-money and be automatically entered into the NSW Landcare Awards.
