Workshops designed for short-term action and long-term planning
09 May 2014
The workshops are aimed at introducing local landholders to the staff of Western Local Land Services and the services they provide as well as strategies to help them manage their land, stock, livelihoods and personal wellbeing in times of difficulty.
Western Local Land Services General Manager, Rob Gregory said the workshops would be informal and would provide a chance for people to seek a wide range of information about the support available when they are faced with uncertain seasonal conditions.
"The Local Land Services team recognises that we have a role to play in supporting landholders during times of difficulty," Mr Gregory said.
"The region we live in is full of climatic challenges and we sometimes need to stop and gather our thoughts so we can plan how best to deal with these challenges.
"We are well positioned to help people take short-term action, while also thinking about the long-term plans they need to put in place to cope in the future.
"Staff will be at each workshop to talk about the services we can provide, including pest and livestock management, grazing routes and advice on livestock health, nutrition and welfare."
The first free session will be at Belvedere Station, near Bourke on Tuesday 27 May, where a tour by Lincoln and Dimity Old will showcase previous successful projects on their property, as well as pest management and plant identification.
Another session will be held at the Brewarrina Visitors Information Centre on Wednesday 28 May.
Guest speaker at the Bourke and Brewarrina workshops will be Daryl Green, an expert in rangeland management and rehabilitation.
Rural Financial Counsellors and Far West Medicare Local support workers will also be available to discuss financial assistance and maintaining wellbeing.
There will also be workshops at Milparinka and the Broken Hill area in June, with stock consultant San Jolly as guest speaker.
