Grant funding available for pest animal and weed control
Southern district landholders and community groups are being encouraged to apply for grant funding for pest animal and weed control.
Acting Manager Land Services - South, Leigh Pyke said interested land managers should complete the application form by Monday 17 November to be eligible for funding.
"This is the first round of funding for pest control in the south since the formation of Local Land Services Western Region and we are keen for the community to take advantage of this opportunity," Mr Pyke said.
"The funding is focused on pest animal control including pigs, foxes and rabbits as well as weed control for boxthorn, boneseed, cactus and other noxious weed varieties," he said.
Landholders and community groups in the Broken Hill, Menindee, Hillston, Balranald, Wentworth and Buronga areas are invited to apply for funding.
Mr Pyke said one of the aims of this project was to promote a collaborative planning approach to pest animals and noxious weed control.
"Working with neighbouring landholders will allow for a more strategic approach and provide long-term benefits for all involved," he said.
"Reducing pest animal populations improves habitat quality for native fauna, protects cultural heritage sites and reduces crop and pasture losses for local landholders.
"Programs that would be considered for funding may include 1080 baiting programs, warren ripping and fumigation for rabbit control, trapping, hunting and the use of exclusion fencing to protect threatened species."
Infestations of noxious weeds have the capacity to take over large areas of grazing land.
"Weeds can exclude stock from water sources and shade, because they tend to grow under trees and around waterways," Mr Pyke said.
"There are a number of different methods that may be used to treat weed infestations including the use of herbicides and manual or mechanical removal."
All grant funding will be offered on a cost share basis and successful applicants will enter into a five-year contract with Local Land Services.
Land managers can download an application form at www.western.lls.nsw.gov.au or talk to the staff at their local office.
