Dareton youth employment training

Six enthusiastic young locals signed up for the skills training program with Western Local Land Services this week.

Coordinating the project is Greg Moulds, Senior Land Services Officer- Horticultural Extension with Western Local Land Services at Buronga.

Mr Moulds said he was impressed with the commitment of the trainees who are all between 16 and 20 years of age and were nominated for the program by the Barkindji Maurara Elders Environmental Team (BMEET).

Western Local Land Services and BMEET are partnering to deliver the program, which will provide exposure, training and knowledge of the citrus industry to help the trainees secure fruit picking and other seasonal work later in the year.

Funding has been provided by the NSW and Australian Governments.

Mr Moulds said the first stage of the project would be a tour of commercial businesses in Mildura, Wentworth and Dareton next week to show the trainees how the citrus industry operates.

The tour will include visits to the Mildura Fruit Company and Woolworths, who are both supporting the program.

"None of the trainees in the program have picked citrus before so this is a good opportunity for them to gain some skills in the industry," he said.

"I hope this project will give them confidence in themselves and develop skills that will stand them in good stead no matter where they go."

A 30-year veteran in the horticulture industry himself, Mr Moulds is keen to pass on his knowledge.

"For me, the best part is that I have a great opportunity to train and provide skills to young adults that will give them a chance to better themselves in society."

Following next week's tour, there will be hands-on skills sessions about production varieties, harvesting, pruning and picking, as well as safe handling, equipment and a session to outline what growers expect from a worker or contractor.

Each trainee will then have at least one week of work placement with a commercial citrus operator as part of the program.
