Irrigation is sourced from both surface and groundwater sources and may be regulated or unregulated. There are over 12,000 water access licence holders in NSW.
Irrigation is integral to cropping and a variety of agricultural systems that are used across NSW. These systems include surface irrigation, sprinkler irrigations and drip/trickle irrigation.
All of these systems require the proper licensing and registration to utilise. NSW has more licenses available for irrigation than any other state in Australia.
NSW irrigators are some of the most efficient in the world and invest in new and innovative technologies to improve profitability and sustainability.
How Local Land Services can help
Local Land Services (LLS) will work closely with research and development organisations like the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) to provide up to date technical advice and support. LLS will also work with organisations such as the Cotton Research and Development Corporation and local irrigation associations and to deliver accurate and up to date information.
Training and courses
LLS are pivotal in the delivery of education programs such as the PROfarm range of short courses, including Lucerne management online, Benchmarking and water budgeting, Centre pivots and lateral moves and Irrigation pumps. They will coordinate local producer groups on timely and locally relevant topics such as irrigation efficiency, equipment maintenance and improvement.
